Talking Our Walk - Signs of the Times

Getting
Started
Set up signs with pictures, facts, or questions for reflection along the Walk route and in the registration area. Arrange some in sequence with quotes from scripture, or statements by contemporary moral leaders. Making Poverty History: Hunger Education Activities that Work! (available from your CWS Regional Office) and the other promotional flyers and fact sheets from Church World Service provide plenty of possibilities.
You might also want to invite other resource people to liven up the start of the Walk - clowns, musicians, etc. Invite local/state/national officials to speak (briefly), to walk and listen to walkers concerns about hunger locally and globally.
Materials Needed
- Heavy weight poster board (you may wish to laminate these or cover with contact paper in case of rain)
- Thin, narrow pieces of wood
- Poster paint or permanent magic markers
- Staples or nails for mounting the poster onto the wood
- String or wire may be necessary if you need to tie signs to fences or posts
Who Can Help?
Making these signs is a great activity for a school class or youth group. Encourage them to decorate the signs as well. Contact your Director of Religious Education, Youth Coordinator, or a teacher. These signs might also be used in the school or church prior to the Walk to generate interest, or following the event to amplify the learnings and enthusiasm.
Examples
The examples below could appear on one sign or as a series (each phrase would then be one sign). End each series with, "We walk because they walk - Church World Service."

Never doubt
that a small group
of thoughtful, committed citizens
can change the world;
indeed it is the only thing that ever has.
